Boxing gloves

You choose a boxing glove by weight (oz), fit and what you'll use it for: pads, heavy bag or sparring. Below you'll find out which weight suits you and what to look for in leather and synthetic leather. Billy uses every brand in the shop himself in his pad training sessions.

Which weight (oz) should you choose?

The weight of a boxing glove is given in ounces (oz) and mainly tells you how much padding it has. For pad work and the heavy bag, most adults go for 12 or 14 oz: enough protection for your knuckles while you can still feel exactly where you land. If you're going to spar, 16 oz is the standard, because the thicker padding spares your training partner. Lighter gloves of 8 or 10 oz are for children, for people with very small hands or for competition. If you weigh more than about 90 kg, 16 oz is a sensible choice for pad work too. Torn between two weights? Take the heavier one.

Leather or synthetic, velcro or laces

Leather gloves from Twins Special, King Pro Boxing or Fairtex X Booster last for years, mould to your hand and feel firmer once broken in. Synthetic leather, as used on many Booster and UFC models, is cheaper, low-maintenance and perfectly fine for two sessions a week. Almost all training gloves close with velcro, which you can do up and undo yourself. Lace-up gloves sit tighter around the wrist, but you need someone to tie them for you; you mostly see them in competition. When trying gloves on, check that you can still move your fingers with hand wraps on and that your wrist stays straight when you make a fist.

Looking after your boxing gloves

Sweat is a glove's worst enemy. Always wear hand wraps, take your gloves out of your bag after training and let them dry open, not on the radiator or in the sun. A glove deodoriser or a pair of drying inserts helps against odour. Wipe leather now and then with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry; synthetic leather can be cleaned with a mild cleaner. Never put gloves in the washing machine. With good care, leather gloves keep their shape for years; synthetic leather lasts one to two years on average with frequent use.

Frequently asked questions

What size boxing gloves do I need for pad training?

For most adults 12 or 14 oz. If you weigh more than 90 kg or also plan to spar, choose 16 oz.

What's the difference between 14 and 16 oz?

16 oz has more padding, which makes it heavier and safer for sparring. 14 oz feels lighter and more direct on the pads.

Are leather boxing gloves worth it?

If you train twice a week or more, yes: leather lasts longer and moulds to your hand. If you train occasionally, synthetic leather will do.

Can I try boxing gloves on first?

Yes, during your free trial session at GetPro Gym in Zwijndrecht (Netherlands) you can try on different sizes and brands.
