Twins Special or Booster: which brand suits you?
Twins: Thai, handmade, roomy, thick padding. Booster: Dutch, more compact, long cuff, entry-level to pro. Choose on hand shape and style.
Twins Special is a Thai brand making handmade leather gloves and pads that fit roomy and are known for thick padding and a long lifespan. Booster Fight Gear is Dutch, fits more compact, has a longer cuff for wrist support and offers a wide range from synthetic leather entry-level models to leather pro gloves. Both are excellent; the choice depends on your hands, your style and your budget.
Twins Special in brief
Twins Special comes from Thailand and has been making muay thai equipment for decades: gloves, shin guards, pads, head guards and groin guards. Everything is handmade from leather in its own factory. The BGVL gloves are among the most widely used training gloves in the world, and the SGL shin guards and KPL pads are the standard in many Thai and European gyms.
Typical of Twins is the roomy, rounded fit with lots of padding. The gloves feel big and stiff at first, but break in to become a supple, protective glove that lasts for years. That makes Twins especially popular for sparring and with athletes who have wide hands. The range is straightforward: few models, lots of colours.
Booster Fight Gear in brief
Booster is a Dutch brand that grew out of the kickboxing scene and is now used all over Europe. The range is broad: from the synthetic leather BT Starter for beginners, via the leather BGL series for advanced athletes, to competition gloves and the Fairtex x Booster collaboration. Plus shorts, shin guards, pads and clothing.
Booster gloves fit somewhat more compact than Twins, with a narrower fist and a longer velcro cuff that locks the wrist in firmly. That suits the Dutch kickboxing style with its heavy use of hands. Because Booster covers several price brackets, there is a model for every budget. The design is often bolder than Twins, with plenty of limited editions.
Fit: roomy or compact
The biggest practical difference is the fit. Twins fits roomy and round; there is plenty of space in the hand, even with thick wraps. People with wide hands or long fingers are comfortable in them. Booster fits more compact and tighter, with a narrower fist; people with narrow hands or short fingers often prefer that.
The cuff differs too. Twins has a shorter, flexible Thai cuff; Booster a longer one that runs further over the wrist. If wrist support matters to you, Booster is the more likely pick; if you clinch a lot and catch kicks, Twins. If in doubt, trying them on is the only real test. In our shop, each model states whether it fits roomy or compact.
Padding and use
Twins is known for thick, soft padding that is kind to your partner in sparring and protects your knuckles well on the bag. The padding is a bit softer than Booster's and feels very natural once broken in. In the BGL series, Booster uses a firmer, multi-layer padding that feels more compact and gives more feel on the pads.
In practice that means: for sparring and all-round use, many athletes pick Twins; for pad work and fast combinations, often Booster. These are nuances; you can do everything with either brand. In his pad sessions Billy uses both brands side by side and picks per student whatever suits their hands best.
Price, lifespan and range
Twins makes almost exclusively leather products and therefore sits in the mid to upper price range. In return you get a long lifespan; five-year-old Twins gloves are no exception. Booster has a wider price spectrum: the synthetic entry-level models are cheap, the leather BGL series comparable to Twins.
Booster also has a much larger clothing range (shorts, shirts, compression) and more variety in design. Twins is stronger in traditional muay thai gear such as Thai groin guards and heavy pads. If you want a complete set from one brand, either will do; if you are after the cheapest entry-level model, Booster is where you end up.
How to choose
- Wide hands, lots of sparring, Thai style with clinch: Twins Special.
