Shorts
Fight shorts are short, wide and have a broad waistband high on the hip, so you can kick and knee freely. Ordinary sports shorts hold your hip back on a high kick. Below you'll find out which type of shorts suits your sport and how to work out your size.

Muay Thai shorts, kickboxing shorts or MMA shorts
Muay Thai shorts are the shortest and widest, with high side slits and a broad, high elastic waistband. They come in satin and in light polyester, often with striking prints from brands like B Legend and Twins Special. Kickboxing shorts look similar but often fall a bit longer and less wide, in the Dutch kickboxing style of Booster and King Pro Boxing. MMA shorts are longer, narrower and have a closed leg with stretch fabric and a velcro closure, so an opponent can't grab hold of them. For kickboxing or Muay Thai pad training you choose Thai or kickboxing shorts.
Size and fit
Choose your size by hip circumference, not by your usual trouser size. The waistband should sit firmly on the hip without pinching, and the legs should hang loosely around your thighs. Lift your knee high: if the waistband rides up or the fabric pulls, the shorts are too small or too long. Many Thai brands run small; always check the size chart in centimetres. Shorts with a drawstring in the waistband can be adjusted, but the cord mustn't dig into your stomach when kneeing in the clinch. If in doubt, try them on during your trial session.
Washing and care
Wash fight shorts inside out at low temperature, without fabric softener and without a tumble dryer, so the prints and elastic stay intact. Satin shorts are better off in a laundry bag. Hang them to dry in the shade. Shorts that feel stiff after washing become supple again after one wear. Keep your competition shorts separate from your training shorts, so the colours stay fresh for the day it matters.
