Pads & mitts

Pads and mitts are the heart of pad training: the trainer holds them and you punch and kick them. Thai pads absorb kicks and knees, focus mitts are for fast punch combinations, kick shields for hard low kicks. Below you'll find out what to choose if you want to work with a training partner yourself.

Thai pads, focus mitts or kick shield

Thai pads are elongated cushions you wear on your forearm. They absorb kicks, knees, punches and elbows and are the basis of every Muay Thai and kickboxing session. Focus mitts are small, curved hand pads for punches; they're light, so the holder can move quickly and you train precision and speed. A kick shield is a large rectangular pad you hold in front of your body for hard low kicks and knees. For home or the gym with a regular partner, a set of Thai pads is the most versatile; focus mitts are a logical second purchase if you want to work on punching technique.

What to look for when choosing

Pay attention to the thickness and stiffness of the padding: too soft and the holder feels every kick in their arm, too hard and the striker gets it back in their wrist. Leather pads from Twins Special or Fairtex X Booster are heavier, stiffer and last for years. Synthetic leather pads from Booster or UFC are lighter and cheaper and perfectly fine for home use. Also look at the fastening: two sturdy velcro straps and a fixed handle keep the pad in place. Curved pads sit a bit more naturally against the arm; straight pads give beginners a larger striking surface.

Holding and maintaining pads properly

Holding pads is a skill in itself. Angle the pad slightly towards the striker, brace your arm at the moment of contact and move with the combination instead of standing still. Switch arms regularly so you don't load one side only. Let pads dry after use and wipe leather with a damp cloth. Don't store them in a closed bag. In Billy's pad training you can see and feel how a well-held pad behaves; that helps enormously when you start working with a partner at home.

A set of Thai pads of medium thickness. With those you train punches, kicks and knees, and the holder can absorb the impact well.

What's the difference between Thai pads and focus mitts?

Thai pads are large and absorb kicks and knees; focus mitts are small and meant for fast punch combinations.

Are leather pads much better than synthetic?
