Mouthguards

A mouthguard protects your teeth, lips and jaw during sparring and competition. You mould it at home in hot water so it fits your teeth exactly. Below you'll find out which mouthguard suits you, how to mould it and when to replace it.

Which mouthguard should you choose?

Mouthguards differ in thickness and in how they're moulded. A thinner model is easier to breathe through and more comfortable for pad training and light sparring; a thicker model absorbs more in hard sparring and competition. Children need a smaller size that suits a changing set of teeth. If you wear braces, choose a model made for that, which leaves room for the braces. The Safejawz mouthguards in the shop are all the type you mould yourself in hot water. A mouthguard that hasn't been moulded properly sits loose and protects poorly, so take your time when fitting it.

How to mould a mouthguard

Boil water, take it off the heat and place the mouthguard in it for the number of seconds stated in the instructions. Take it out, let it cool very briefly so you don't burn your mouth, and press it onto your upper teeth. Suck it into a vacuum and push it against your teeth and palate with your tongue and fingers. Hold that for about half a minute, then cool the mouthguard in cold water. Try it: it should stay in place without you having to clench your jaw, and you should be able to talk and breathe. If it doesn't fit well, you can usually mould it once more.

Care and replacement

Rinse the mouthguard with cold water after every session and brush it now and then with a toothbrush and a little toothpaste. Keep it in the supplied case with ventilation holes, not loose in your bag. Never use hot water to clean it, as it will lose its shape. Replace your mouthguard if it tears, if the edges crumble or if it no longer stays in place; with children often sooner, because their teeth change. A mouthguard is personal and not something you share.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mouthguard compulsory for pad training?

Not in one-to-one pad training without contact. For sparring and competition it is, and in many gyms for partner drills too.

Which mouthguard is suitable for children?

A children's model that fits a smaller jaw and changing teeth. Re-mould it once teeth have been replaced.

Can I wear a mouthguard with braces?

Yes, with a model made specifically for brace wearers. If in doubt, check with your orthodontist.

How often should I replace my mouthguard?

When it tears, crumbles or no longer stays in place. With intensive sparring usually every year, with children sooner.
