Headguards
You wear a headguard when sparring to prevent cuts and bruises and to soften the impact a little. It doesn't make a hard punch harmless, but it does let you spar more often and more safely. Below you'll find out which model suits you and how it should fit.

Open, with cheek protection or with a face bar
An open headguard covers the forehead, temples and back of the head and leaves your face free. You see the most and breathe most easily; it protects against cuts around the eyebrows and against blows to the temple. A model with cheek protection has extra padding along the jaw, which helps against bruised cheeks but costs a little vision. A guard with a nose bar or face protection is for those who spar a lot and want to spare their nose, for example in fight preparation. For most kickboxers who spar a few times a month, an open model or one with cheek protection is the right choice.
Fit: how a headguard should sit
A headguard mustn't shift when you shake your head or take a punch. Choose the size by your head circumference, measured just above the eyebrows, and then adjust the velcro straps on top and at the back. It should sit snugly without pinching; after a few sessions the padding gives a little. If you can see the edge of the guard in the corners of your eyes, it's sitting too low or it's too big. Laces or a chin strap hold it in place even better. Leather models from Booster or King Pro Boxing last a long time; synthetic leather is cheaper and lighter.
Care and replacement
Let the guard dry after every session with the straps undone. Wipe the inside and use a deodoriser if you like. Sweat and moisture break down the padding, so never store it wet. Replace a headguard when the padding is compressed flat or the cover tears; a sagging guard barely protects any more. Preferably don't share a headguard, for hygiene reasons. With normal use a good guard lasts several years.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a headguard for pad training?
No. In one-to-one pad training there's no contact to the head. You need one as soon as you start sparring.
Which size headguard should I choose?
Measure your head circumference above the eyebrows and compare with the size chart. It should sit snugly without pinching.
Open model or with cheek protection?
Open for the best vision and breathing; with cheek protection if you often take shots to the jaw or spar a lot.
Does a headguard prevent a knockout?
No. It mainly protects against cuts and bruises and softens the impact a little. Sparring at a sensible pace remains the most important protection.
