Head guard for sparring: which one should you choose?

Open model for vision and breathing, cheek protection for extra coverage; size by head circumference, leather for fit and durability.

For sparring you choose an open-face head guard if vision and breathing come first, or a model with cheek protection if you want more coverage around the cheekbones. You determine the size by head circumference. A leather model from Twins Special, Booster or King Pro Boxing fits best and lasts longest.

What a head guard does and doesn't do

A head guard reduces the impact of punches and kicks to your head and above all protects against cuts, bruises and grazes from gloves, elbows and heads coming in. That makes sparring safer and more pleasant, and lets you spar more often and for longer without visible marks.

What it doesn't do is make every blow harmless. A head guard is no reason to spar harder. Technical, controlled sparring remains the foundation; the guard is an extra layer. In most gyms it is compulsory for sparring, and for youth and amateur competitions the federation often prescribes a specific type.

Open face: vision and breathing

The most widely used model has an open face: protection around the forehead, temples, ears and back of the head, but clear vision and a free nose and mouth. You see kicks and punches coming clearly, breathe easily and don't feel boxed in.

This model suits technical sparring and athletes who mainly want to prevent bruises and grazes. Your nose and cheekbones stay unprotected, so in hard sparring you will feel a well-placed punch. Twins Special, Booster and King Pro Boxing all make this type, in leather and in synthetic leather. In our shop you'll find them under head guards with the size chart per brand.

Cheek protection and full protection

A model with cheek protection has two padded cushions along the cheekbones. They catch hooks and high kicks and keep your face cleaner after a hard round. Vision downwards and to the side is somewhat restricted, and the guard is warmer.

The next step up is a head guard with a bar or face mask for the nose. These are mainly used by athletes who need to protect their nose, for example in the run-up to a fight, or in sports with lots of knees and elbows. Vision is even more limited and the guard is heavier. For most recreational athletes an open model or a model with cheek protection is the best balance.

The right size and fit

Measure your head circumference with a tape just above your ears and eyebrows. Most brands use roughly this sizing:

  • S: 52 to 55 cm
  • M: 55 to 58 cm
  • L: 58 to 61 cm
  • XL: from 61 cm

A head guard should sit snugly without giving you a headache. Shake your head: it must not shift or slide down over your eyes. Most models have an adjustable velcro closure at the back and a strap under the chin or over the top of the head to set the height. Try it on with your mouthguard in, because that changes the shape of your jaw and with it the fit under the chin.

Leather or synthetic leather, and care

As with gloves, leather lasts longer and moulds itself to your head. Synthetic leather is cheaper and lighter, but gets warmer and can crack at the seams after a while. If you spar weekly, leather is the better investment. If you spar occasionally, synthetic leather is perfectly fine.

Care is simple: wipe it down with a damp cloth after training, let it dry open and use an antibacterial spray on the inside now and then. Never in the washing machine. Replace the guard when the padding at the forehead becomes noticeably thinner or the closures no longer hold properly; a guard that shifts on impact does not protect.

Head guards and competitions

At amateur competitions in boxing and kickboxing a head guard is often compulsory, but not every model is allowed. Federations usually prescribe an open model without cheek protection and without a mask, sometimes in a fixed colour. Check that before you buy a competition guard. For training you can use whatever you like, within the rules of your own gym.

For youth, a head guard is almost always mandatory, including for sparring. Youth sizes run smaller and often have extra padding at the front. Never choose a size too big for children to grow into; a shifting guard is less safe than no guard at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is a head guard compulsory for sparring?

In most gyms yes, and for youth almost always. Ask your coach; the rules differ from gym to gym.

What size head guard do I need?

Measure your head circumference above the ears and eyebrows. Roughly: S 52-55 cm, M 55-58 cm, L 58-61 cm, XL above that.

Does a head guard protect against a knockout?

No. It dampens the impact and prevents cuts and bruises, but it is no reason to spar harder.

Open model or with cheek protection?

Open for vision and breathing in technical sparring; cheek protection if you spar harder or want to spare your face.

Can I wear my training head guard in a competition?

Not always. Federations often prescribe an open model without cheek pieces. Check the rules of the organisation.
