Boxing gloves for sparring or for bag work?

Sparring: 14 or 16 oz with soft padding for your partner. Bag work: more compact, around your weight class. One pair for everything: 14 or 16 oz.

For sparring you use a glove of 14 or 16 oz with soft, thick padding that protects your partner. For bag work and pads you can go lighter and more compact, around your weight class, with firmer padding that keeps its shape for a long time. If you only want one pair, choose 14 or 16 oz and use it for everything.

Why the purpose makes the difference

A boxing glove has two jobs: protecting your own hand and, when sparring, protecting your opponent. On the bag and the pads only the first job counts. You want a glove that feels compact, supports your knuckles well and holds its shape under repeated hard impact.

When sparring, the balance shifts. You're hitting a person, and then the softness of the padding matters more than the feel in your punch. That's why sparring gloves are heavier and have a thicker, softer layer at the front. A hard 10 oz bag glove on someone's face isn't just dangerous, it's banned at virtually every gym. Once you understand this difference, the choice is simple.

Features of a good sparring glove

A sparring glove is at least 14 oz and for adults usually 16 oz. Key features:

  • Thick, multi-layer padding at the front that spreads the impact
  • A round shape without hard edges, including on the sides and the back of the hand
  • An attached thumb that can't end up in your partner's eye
  • Velcro with the hard side fully covered, so your partner doesn't get scrapes
  • A sturdy cuff, because in sparring you land more often at an angle on an arm or elbow

The Twins BGVL3 in 16 oz has been one of the most popular sparring gloves for years for exactly these reasons. Booster BGL and Fairtex x Booster also have models that score well here. In our shop, every glove states whether it's suitable for sparring.

Features of a good bag glove

For bag work you're after the opposite: a compact fist and padding that's firm and doesn't collapse. A heavy bag demands a lot from the padding; a glove that's too soft feels flat after a few weeks. Models with a denser foam layer or a double layer hold up longer.

You choose the oz size by weight: 10 oz up to 60 kg, 12 oz up to 75 kg, 14 oz up to 90 kg and 16 oz above that. Experienced fighters sometimes go one size lower for extra feel, beginners one size higher. A bag glove doesn't need a soft front, but it does need good wrist support: the bag gives less than a person, and a badly thrown punch lands straight on your wrist.

Can you use one pair for everything?

Yes, and most recreational fighters do. Choose 14 oz if you're under 75 kg and 16 oz above that. You do give up a little: on the bag a 16 oz feels a bit bulky, and for sparring a glove that's seen a lot of bag work is less soft than a fresh one. But it works fine.

Do keep an eye on wear, though. A glove used on a heavy bag every week loses softness in the padding. After a year it's really no longer suitable for use on a partner, even if it still looks good on the outside. If you can feel your knuckles almost coming through the padding, it's time for a new pair, or this becomes your dedicated bag glove.

When to get two pairs?

Once you train three times a week or more and spar regularly, a second pair makes sense. Your sparring glove then stays soft and clean, and your bag glove can wear out without hurting anyone. Added bonus: your gloves get to dry in turns, which extends the lifespan of both.

A practical split: a lighter glove (10 or 12 oz) for bag and pads, and a 16 oz for sparring. Many fighters choose a more compact glove for the pads because they can throw combinations faster and the trainer feels the punches better. Billy himself trains with a lighter glove on the pads and only takes the heavy ones for sparring.

Your partner's safety and your own

Sparring is only fun when it's safe. Before every sparring round, check that your velcro is closed and the hard side isn't sticking out, that your thumb is still attached and that the padding hasn't collapsed. Always wear hand wraps, a mouthguard and, for harder sparring, headgear.

Agree on how hard you'll go, too. Most gyms spar technically, at 50 to 70 percent, and then 16 oz with soft padding is more than enough. A new glove is a bit stiffer at first; break it in on the bag or pads a few times before you spar with it. The guide on cleaning explains how to keep the padding and the leather in good shape for as long as possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I spar with bag gloves?

Only if they're 14 oz or heavier and the padding is still soft. A collapsed or hard glove doesn't belong on a partner.

Does a glove wear out faster on the bag?

Yes. A heavy bag gives very little, so the padding compacts faster. That's why many fighters keep a separate pair for sparring.

Which oz for pads?

The same as for the bag: by body weight. A slightly lighter glove gives you more speed and feel on the pads.

How do I know the padding is worn out?

When you can feel your knuckles through the front when making a fist, or when the glove feels flat compared to new.

Is 16 oz too heavy for the bag?

Not too heavy, just a bit bulkier. Many fighters deliberately train with 16 oz on the bag for extra conditioning.
