Shin guards

Shin guards protect your shin and instep when kicking pads, sparring and blocking. A good guard stays in place and doesn't twist away. Below you'll find out which size you need and which type suits your training.

Which type of shin guard?

There are roughly two kinds. Classic shin guards have a hard or firm shell over the shin, a separate instep guard and close with two velcro straps behind the calf. They give the most protection and are used for sparring and hard kicks on pads. Elastic shin guards are a thin sleeve with padding that you pull on like a sock; they fit snugly, don't slide and are light, but protect less. For sparring you almost always choose the classic version from Booster, Twins Special or King Pro Boxing. For beginners who only kick pads, a light guard is often enough.

Size and fit

Sizes usually run from S to XL and depend on your height and calf circumference. A guard should run from just below the knee to your instep, without the shell getting jammed when you bend your knee. Pull the straps tight, but not so tight that your calf is pinched. If you have thick calves, go a size up; the straps will then have enough length. Children have their own sizes. After putting the guard on, twist it once around your leg and see if it springs back: if it does, it fits well.

Care

After training, stand shin guards upright to dry with the inside open. Wipe leather and synthetic leather with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry before storing. Elastic guards can be washed at low temperature in a laundry bag; classic guards cannot. Check the velcro regularly: if it no longer grips properly, the guard will slide during sparring, and that's how accidents happen. Leather guards last for years if kept dry.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need shin guards for pad training?

In one-to-one pad training you kick pads, so hard protection isn't compulsory. A light guard is nice for your instep if you kick a lot.

Which size shin guard should I choose?

Look at height and calf circumference in the size chart. The shell should run from below the knee to the instep. With thick calves, go a size up.

Elastic or classic with velcro?

For sparring, classic with velcro. For light pad training or as a second pair, elastic will do.

Can shin guards go in the washing machine?

Only elastic models, at low temperature. Classic guards should only be wiped and dried.
