Training equipment
Besides pads and gloves you need very little to work on conditioning, strength and coordination at home. A skipping rope, a couple of resistance bands and a grip trainer cover most of it. Below you'll find out what Billy recommends for in between pad sessions.

What do you really need at home?
A skipping rope comes first: ten minutes of skipping trains your conditioning, your footwork and your rhythm, and it takes up hardly any space. Choose a rope with ball bearings and an adjustable length. Resistance bands are for shoulders, hips and practising punches and kicks against resistance. A grip trainer or grip ring strengthens your forearms, which helps with a properly closed fist and with clinch work. A stopwatch or interval timer makes it easy to train in rounds of two or three minutes, just like in class. In the beginning you don't need more than this for home.
How to use the equipment between sessions
Plan two short sessions a week in between your pad sessions. Start with five to ten minutes of skipping, then do three two-minute rounds of shadow boxing with a resistance band and finish with a few sets for your grip and your core. Keep the rounds short and the rest short too, so it resembles the load of a thirty-minute pad session. Work on technique, not exhaustion: at home nobody sees your posture, so better slow and correct than fast and sloppy. Billy gives pointers in class that you can repeat at home.
Care and safety
Check resistance bands regularly for small tears and stop using them once the rubber is damaged. Store them out of the sun. Store a skipping rope loosely, so the cable doesn't kink. Skip on a flat, slightly springy surface and not on tiles or concrete; that spares your ankles and knees. Train in shoes when skipping and barefoot for shadow boxing and kicking. Build up gradually if you haven't trained for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best training equipment for home?
A skipping rope. It trains conditioning, footwork and rhythm in very little space. After that, resistance bands and a grip trainer.
How long should a skipping rope be?
Stand on the middle of the rope; the handles should reach your armpits. Adjustable ropes can be shortened yourself.
How often do I train at home alongside pad training?
Two short sessions a week of twenty to thirty minutes are enough to keep making progress.
Do I need a punching bag at home?
Not necessarily. Shadow boxing, skipping rope and bands will already take you far. A punching bag is a good addition if you have the space.
