Punching bags
A punching bag at home lets you practise punches and kicks on the days you're not on the pads. Which bag you choose depends on your space, your weight and whether you also want to kick. Below you'll find out the differences and what to look out for when hanging it.
Popular
Hanging or free-standing, filled or unfilled
A hanging punching bag is the most used: it swings back slightly, which is more realistic, and it needs no floor space apart from the room to move around it. You do need a sturdy ceiling or a wall bracket. A free-standing bag has a filled base and is the solution if you can't hang anything, for example in a rented flat; it slides a bit on hard kicks. Filled bags come ready to use; unfilled bags you fill yourself with textile or sand, which is cheaper but takes work. For kicking, choose a long bag of 150 to 180 cm; for punching only, 100 to 120 cm is enough.
Weight, material and hanging
As a guideline, a good bag weighs about half your own body weight: then it doesn't swing too much and a punch feels solid. Leather lasts the longest; synthetic leather and canvas are lighter and cheaper. Hang the bag from a ceiling hook in a beam or from a wall bracket fixed into load-bearing brickwork, with a spring or chain above it to dampen the blows. The bottom of the bag should hang at about hip height for kicks and punches. After the first few sessions, check that the fixing hasn't worked loose.
How to train on the bag
Wear boxing gloves and hand wraps, at home too; a bag is harder than a pad. Work in rounds of two or three minutes with a minute's rest, just like in pad training. Alternate punches, kicks and knees and move around the bag instead of standing still. Billy recommends using the bag mainly to repeat what you've learned in class, and not to experiment with technique that isn't solid yet. Wipe the bag down after use and let your gloves dry.

Frequently asked questions
How heavy should my punching bag be?
About half your body weight. If you weigh 80 kg, a bag of 35 to 45 kg is good.
Which length punching bag for kickboxing?
For kicks and punches 150 to 180 cm, so you can practise low kicks too. For punching only, 100 to 120 cm.
Can I hang a punching bag from a plasterboard ceiling?
No. Fix the hook into a wooden beam or concrete ceiling, or use a wall bracket in load-bearing brickwork. Otherwise a free-standing bag is the safer choice.
Buy filled or unfilled?
Filled is ready to use and evenly packed. Unfilled is cheaper and lighter to ship, but filling takes time and has to be done tightly.
