MMA gloves

MMA gloves have open fingers, so you can punch and grab. They have far less padding than boxing gloves and therefore demand a properly closed fist. Below you'll find out the difference between training and competition models and which size you need.

Training glove or competition glove

MMA training gloves, also called sparring gloves, have extra padding on the knuckles and sometimes a closed thumb. With those you can hit pads and the heavy bag and spar at a sensible pace without damaging your hand or your partner. Competition gloves of 4 oz have little padding and are only meant for the cage; for pad training they're too thin. Grappling gloves sit in between, with light padding and an open hand. If you're starting out in MMA, choose a training glove from UFC or Booster. Billy also uses those in his pad sessions for students switching from kickboxing to MMA.

Size and fit

MMA gloves come in sizes S to XL based on your hand circumference, measured around the knuckles without the thumb. Your fingers should move freely and the padding should sit exactly on your knuckles when you make a fist. If the padding sits too high or too low, you'll land with bare knuckles. The wrist strap should close firmly; MMA gloves give little wrist support, so hand wraps or a wrist wrap underneath are sensible for pad work. Try the glove with a closed fist and with an open hand, so you know that both grabbing and punching work well.

Punching safely with little padding

With an MMA glove you feel every punch that doesn't land straight. Close your fist fully, keep your wrist straight and land with the first two knuckles. In the first few weeks, train on pads with less power and more attention to your fist before you start hitting hard. Let the gloves dry open after training and wipe them down; synthetic leather can be cleaned with a mild cleaner. Replace them when the knuckle padding is flat or the stitching comes loose.

Frequently asked questions

Can I train on pads with MMA gloves?

Yes, with a training model with extra padding. Competition gloves of 4 oz are too thin for that.

Which size MMA gloves do I need?

Measure your hand circumference around the knuckles and check the size chart. The padding should sit exactly on your knuckles when you make a fist.

What's the difference from boxing gloves?

MMA gloves have open fingers for grabbing and far less padding. Boxing gloves protect more when punching hard.

Do I wear hand wraps under MMA gloves?

For pad training and sparring that's sensible, because the glove itself gives little wrist support.
