Groin guards

A groin guard, also called a cup, protects you from a stray knee or low kick during sparring. For pad training you don't need one; for sparring and competition you do. Below you'll find out which types there are and what to look for in the fit.

Which types of groin guard are there?

The simplest version is a plastic cup in an elastic brief or jockstrap; you wear it under your shorts and it's light and affordable. Thai steel groin guards are a hard metal cup with cords you tie around your hips and thighs; they offer the most protection and are widely used in Muay Thai for hard sparring. Leather or synthetic leather guards with velcro sit in between and are quick to put on. For women there are models with a flat, wider shell. For occasional sparring a cup with a brief is enough; if you spar a lot with low kicks, choose the steel or leather version.

Fit and care

A groin guard should sit tight against the body without shifting when you kick or lift your knee. With a cup and brief, choose the size of the brief by hip circumference; the cup itself is usually one standard size. With Thai cord models you decide how tight the cords sit yourself. Try a few kicks and knees at home before you spar; if the guard shifts, it's too big or the cords are too loose. Wash the brief or the cords at low temperature, wipe the cup with a damp cloth and let everything air-dry.
