Deodorisers, drying inserts and cleaners

Glove deodorisers are sticks or pouches with absorbent material and a light scent that you put in your gloves after training; they draw the moisture out of the padding. Drying inserts with, for example, cedar wood or activated charcoal do the same without scent and last a long time. A glove cleaner or spray fights bacteria on the inside; use it sparingly and let the gloves dry properly afterwards. For the outside of leather gloves, a leather balm now and then is enough. Avoid household disinfectants with a lot of alcohol: they dry the leather out and make it brittle.

A daily routine that works

Always wear hand wraps, so most of the sweat stays in those. Take the gloves out of your bag straight after training, open the closure and stand them upright in an airy spot. Put a deodoriser or drying insert inside. Not on the radiator, not in the sun and never in the washing machine or tumble dryer. Wipe the outside weekly with a slightly damp cloth. If the gloves still smell despite all this, the padding is usually already affected and only replacing them will help. With this routine, leather gloves last for years and synthetic leather considerably longer than without.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the stink out of my boxing gloves?

Dry them after every session, use deodorisers or drying inserts and wear hand wraps. A cleaning spray helps with early odour; with strong, old stink the padding is affected.

Can boxing gloves go in the washing machine?

No. Water and spinning damage the padding and the leather. Only wipe and dry.

Do drying inserts really work?

Yes, they draw moisture out of the padding and slow the growth of bacteria. You do have to use them after every session.

Can I treat leather gloves with balm?

A thin layer of leather balm now and then keeps the leather supple. Not too often and not on the inside.
