Compression wear

Compression wear sits tight against the skin, doesn't ride up and wicks sweat away quickly. Rashguards and compression tights are widely worn in MMA and grappling, and increasingly under shorts in kickboxing. Below you'll find out what it does and which size to choose.

What does compression wear do?

A rashguard is a tight shirt made of stretch fabric with short or long sleeves. It protects your skin from chafing on the mat and from contact with a training partner, and it stays in place during grappling. Compression tights, also called spats, do the same for your legs and are often worn under MMA or kickboxing shorts. The light pressure of the fabric keeps your muscles warm, which is nice during the warm-up and in cold gyms. Claims about faster recovery or more strength aren't firmly proven; the biggest advantage is that the clothing doesn't ride up and dries quickly.

Size and use

Compression wear should fit tightly without restricting your movement. Choose your usual size; if you go a size up, it fits like an ordinary shirt and loses its function. With long sleeves, make sure the fabric doesn't pull back towards the wrist when your arm is extended. Women often choose a size smaller in unisex models. Wash compression wear at low temperature, inside out and without fabric softener, as that damages the stretch fabric. No tumble dryer. Well looked after, a rashguard lasts for years; the fabric only loses its tightness once the elastane wears out.
