What you wear to training matters more than you'd think: a cotton shirt gets heavy with sweat and tight trousers hold your kicks back. Below you'll find out what you need for a thirty-minute pad session and which clothing is handy outside of it.

What do you wear to pad training?
For the session itself you need a light, quick-drying shirt and fight shorts. Shirts made of polyester or a polyester blend wick sweat away and dry quickly; cotton holds moisture and starts to chafe. A rashguard, a tight shirt with long or short sleeves, is comfortable if you also train grappling or MMA, because it doesn't ride up. For women, a sports bra with good support matters more than an expensive shirt. You don't need socks: on the mat and when kicking pads you train barefoot. Bring a spare shirt for after training.
Hoodies, trousers and clothing for outside the gym
A hoodie or training jacket is handy for the warm-up and for after training, when you head outside having cooled down. Long training trousers are for warming up or for strength and conditioning work, not for kicking pads. Brands like LVL-UP, Booster, UFC and Twins Special make clothing you can wear both in the gym and on the street. Choose a size in which you can move your arms freely. The clothing is largely cut unisex; women often choose a size smaller. Mind the prints when washing: inside out and cold.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to my first pad training session?
A quick-drying shirt and short, loose sports shorts or fight shorts. You can borrow gloves the first time.
Do I train in shoes or barefoot?
Barefoot. In kickboxing and Muay Thai you kick without shoes, on pads too.
Do I need a rashguard for kickboxing?
Not necessary, but nice to have. For MMA and grappling a rashguard is the standard because it doesn't ride up.
How does fight wear fit size-wise?
Usually true to size and unisex. Women often choose a size smaller; with Thai brands always check the size chart.
