Bags

Gloves, shin guards, hand wraps, mouthguard, shorts, towel and a dry shirt: a fight gear bag has to swallow more than an ordinary sports bag. Look for ventilation and a separate compartment for wet kit. Below you'll find out which bag suits your training.

Which bag suits your training?

If you cycle or walk to the gym, a backpack with a wide main compartment and a separate ventilated compartment for gloves is the most practical. A classic shoulder bag or duffel has more room and is handy if you also bring shin guards and a headguard for sparring. A fabric gym bag with a drawstring is light and cheap, suitable for a short pad session with just gloves, hand wraps and a shirt. Brands like Booster, UFC and Twins Special make bags in different sizes; look at the capacity in litres and the width of the opening.

Ventilation and care

Wet gloves in a closed bag are the fastest route to stink and mould. Choose a bag with ventilation mesh or a separate compartment for wet kit, and always take gloves and protective gear out of the bag as soon as you get home to dry. Put hand wraps and your mouthguard in a separate pocket. Empty the bag now and then, open it up and let it air; most bags can be cleaned with a damp cloth. A bag that sits on the changing-room floor deserves a regular clean underneath.

Frequently asked questions

Which bag is handy for pad training?

For a short pad session a gym bag or small backpack is enough: gloves, hand wraps, shorts, shirt and towel.

How big should a fight gear bag be?

For training with sparring 40 to 60 litres, so gloves, shin and head guards and clothing fit in. Pad training only: 20 to 30 litres.

How do I stop my bag from stinking?

Take gloves and protective gear out of the bag as soon as you get home, let everything dry and choose a bag with ventilation.

Can a fight gear bag go in the washing machine?

Usually not. Clean it with a damp cloth and let it dry open.
