Ankle guards

Ankle guards are elastic sleeves that support your ankle and keep it warm when kicking, pivoting and moving your feet. They're light, fit snugly and are worn as standard by many Thai boxers. Below you'll find out when they're useful and which size to choose.

What are ankle guards for?

In kickboxing and Muay Thai you pivot a lot on the ball of your foot and land kicks on the instep or the shin. An ankle guard keeps the ankle warm and gives light compression, which makes the joint feel more stable and less prone to overuse. They also protect the skin of the instep and heel from chafing on the mat. They aren't braces: with a real ankle injury they're no substitute for medical advice. Many fighters wear them out of habit, because the foot feels firmer when kicking pads and when sparring.

Size and use

Ankle guards usually come as a pair and in sizes S to XL based on shoe size. They should fit snugly without cutting off your foot; your toes shouldn't change colour. Pull them up to just above the ankle and make sure the heel sits in the cut-out. You wear them barefoot, never with shoes. Wash them after a few sessions at low temperature and let them air-dry. The elastic gets slacker over time; replace them when they slide down during training.
